At
the end of 2003, the total leasing production
figure amounted to 3,501.83 million EUR, i.e. an increase
of 1.44 %. However, this increase does not reflect the real
progress of leasing during that year. One must
indeed take into account some exceptional transactions in
the field of real estate lesing made by
a company, which can seriously influence the figures during
a year. The real trend as for the market and for
leasing can be seen in the 4,45% growth of the leasing of
movables. By comparison, the increase of gross
fixed capital formation by companies amounts only to 2,4
% and the growth of the gross national product was 2,7%.
The
market penetration rate of the leasing produced by the members
of the Belgian Leasing Association, the calculation of which
is based on a comparison between leasing production
and the volume of investment depending on the gross corporate
capital formation, remained at a steady 9.75 % level in
2004. The reason for this is that the increase of corporate
investment was the same as that of leasing taken as a whole.
Between 1997 and 2004, the market penetration
rate of leasing taken as whole went up from 7.45
to 9.75 %. By contrast, the market penetration
rate of leasing of movables increased from 7.81 % in 2002
to 8.86 % in 2003, whereas it was no more than 6.63 % in
1997. Looking at the overall leasing market and taking into
account the figures from Renta and from non-member captive
companies, one can see that the market penetration rate
of leasing amounts to almost 13%.
At
the end of 2003, the Belgian Leasing Association
consisted of 31 members who provided leasing of
industrial and office equipment, cars, trucks and real estate,
i.e. twelve members less than at the end of 1998. The leasing
market in Belgium has been characterised by important concentration
moves which have strongly influenced the market shares.
The members of the Belgian Leasing Association underwrite
the major part of leasing in Belgium.
